Not your average escape from 9-5

I'm lucky to have a job that I love and so strangely fell into doing, but sometimes I cant help admiring those who have mustered up the guts to quit their 9-5 jobs to pursue their passions. I'm not sure I'd have the guts for it, but sometimes it can be tempting, seeing as Dan and my other housemate are both self employed. I could go private with my profession, but I don't consider myself to have the skill base or experience to go it alone just yet.

Dan is a photographer, and unconventionally, our housemate fancies himself as a bit of a Kristen Bicknell, and escaped the 9-5 to be a professional poker player(!) I couldn't even tell you the difference between a full house and a royal flush, and I fall asleep whenever he tries to teach me anything.

You might have visions of an online poker player simply strolling out to their local coffee shop, laptop tucked under their armpit, plugging into the free wi-fi and sitting back whilst enjoying a few casual hands and a latte, but you'd be wrong. Hounam would be in agreement with Kristen in that they both like to work in a clutter free environment - I suppose its important when you're playing over 400,000 hands in one month! According to the interview Kristen spends most of her day sat in front of her iMac in the corner of her lounge with only a small dog for company. According to Kristen (read the full interview here), those hours of dedicated poker-playing won her the top prize worth almost $175,000 at a 2013 World Series of Poker event - Not a bad return for playing a few hands of cards!

It just goes to show that no matter what you're interested, if you've got the dedication and stamina, theres money to be made in every corner, and an even greater amount of dedication seems to be required to be able to make your living at it. Me? I think I'll fold and stick to my day job ;)

What would you love to do?

  1. Victoria Coren just won big in Poker, almost £400,000 I think. I don't have a very good poker face, so I probably wouldn't do very well.
I honestly don't know what I'd love to do. I'm a bit of a jack of all, as long as I can be creative I'm happy.

  2. Oh wow - I also envy these people, a poker player, def not normal 9-5! It's the security thing I would worry about & to be honest I couldn't handle that pressure! Not that I am any good at poker lol When we went to Vegas we had a $20 limit & I was freakin out when I was down to last few bucks & then I won $50 & hubby won $50 & we quickly grabbed our money & spent it before we could gamble any more lol
